Frequently we are asked by parents, “Do you know any attorneys who are knowledgeable about parental alienation in our area?” Unfortunately, frequently the answer is “no”.
We have come to learn that the need for attorneys who have a practical working knowledge in this area is growing larger and larger. That is one of the reasons we decided to create the National Association of Parental Alienation Specialists (NAOPAS).
In our role as expert witness or child custody evaluator we have frequently observed attorneys being challenged by common misperceptions and misinformation of Parental Alienation by an opposing attorney or even the judge. One of our goals is to assist attorneys litigating cases involving children rejecting a parent.
Frequently we are asked by judges and attorneys, “Is there a certifying organization for specialists in parental alienation?” Up to this point there hasn’t been. We recognize that attorneys cannot be “certified” in this area as there is no legal subspecialty in Parental Alienation (PA), however they can be taught the unique characteristics of parental alienation and how to litigate effectively such complicated cases.
National Association for Parental Alienation Specialists was created to address the need in family law cases involving aspects of parental alienation where one must proceed in their representation in ways that are very different than if parental alienation were not present.
Representation in these cases requires specialized understanding, knowledge and strategy in order to assist the court in having an understanding of the dynamics of the phenomenon of PA and ultimately in finding a remedy.
While the phenomenon of parental alienation is not “rocket science,” understanding what it really is and how to present it to the court is founded in scientifically based principles and established research.
The purpose and mission of the NAOPAS is to:
- Provide the skills, information, tools & requisite resources necessary to achieve the task of effectively exposing cases of parental alienation in one source location, within easy reach of the attorney.
- Prepare trial attorneys to present scientifically based research and information that exposes the common distortions about the subject.
As NAOPAS matures, the attorneys who have attended our workshops and have maintained their knowledge base on this subject through our continuing education programs will be discoverable to litigants who are seeking such representation. This website and blog will allow visitors to search our database of attorneys using their ZIP Code to identify attorneys knowledgeable in parental alienation.
